Dryer Vent Cleaning and Fire Prevention Tips for the Holidays

Dryer vent cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer related fires. Since more home fires are reported during the holiday season, Dryer Vent Wizard is also providing tips to prevent holiday fires:

Choosing the Perfect Christmas Tree

Extra care needs to be taken when bringing a live tree into your home. A burning Christmas tree will quickly fill your home with smoke and deadly gases.

Choose a fresh-cut tree. Needles should be green and hard to bend back; not dry and brittle. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. When shaken or bounced off the ground, a fresh tree will not lose too many needles. A tree that has been cut too long and dried out is a fire hazard.

Do not cut the tree too early or leave it up for more than two weeks. Keep the stand filled with water and avoid placing it too close to the fire place or a heat vent.

Keep candles and open flame away from the tree.

Do not try burning your tree in the fire place or wood burning stove. Take it to a recycling center or have it hauled away by your trash pick-up service.

Lighting and Decorating

Check your lights each year for frayed wires, broken sockets, gaps in insulation or excessive kinking before hanging them.

Use lights that are approved by a safety testing laboratory. Avoid overloading electrical circuits. Do not connect too many strands together. Check the wires when lit; they should not be warm to the touch.

Make sure decorations and fake trees are flame resistant

Do not throw wrapping paper into the fire place

Never go to sleep or leave the house when Christmas lights are on or the clothes dryer is running!

Dryer vent cleaning is my biggest fire prevention tip of the year; however, since more home fires are reported during the holiday season, I figured some of them were likely to be related to holiday decorating.
